Rules review is up, too.

Also, I was all excited to show off my assembled Exodus Wars Behemoth:

Image

Then I knocked it over and it broke into a million pieces:

Image
 :x

Just kidding. I'm at it again, the whole thing's magnetized. :D

Image

Some notes: I used the same 5/32" diameter by 1/32" thick magnets I used on my Minervans (and made sure I got the right polarities to interchange parts if I want - Triple Exterminator UPV, mmmm). Some of these components are heavy. Each of the primary weapons has a stack of two magnets instead of just one, because they were falling off otherwise from a combination of weight and the unbalanced load prying them apart. The body has a stack of three at the waist (though in the future I'd do two in the waist and two in the legs), allowing the whole thing to be picked up by the body:

Image

The downside? I'm down 36 magnets. And I'm still concerned about my plans for Laser Blaster proxies - I'm wondering how many magnets I'll need to make sure I can hang a single barrel slug cannon from a double barrel slug cannon from the arm joint to make a triple barrel.

I wandered by Scale Creep's new shop in Oak Park yesterday, and ended up getting more IJN for Victory at Sea. Nagatos, Kongos, Akagi and Kaga, Takaos (which I didn't need...) and this:

Image

That's right, I bought a Habbakuk. Still not sure how to paint it, and it'll almost certainly never see play (1,200 damage, 25 flights of aircraft, 20 dice of Secondaries, and 40 dice of AAA? Could I stick my hand in a meat grinder instead?) but for $8.50 it was totally worth it.

The first few bits of UCM - all are finished with the camo, but only one of the Bears is complete.

Looking good. I just picked up the rules myself. Looking at PHR or Shaltari. A bit further out though, moving at the end of the month. Plus side, I will have my own room to model and a heated garage to play in. Do you have a second force to play with. I would like to try out the game, especially before I drop too much money into. A bit worried about the rules being a bit on the thin side for a long term investment.

Thanks tor whatever insight you may have,

I've agreed to run demos at Adepticon; I have the remainder of 750pt of UCM and a full 750pt of PHR en route, so when you have the time I'd be happy to teach you.

The rules look surprisingly robust - they occupy a middle ground between Epic/Warmaster style games and 40k/Warmahordes style in terms of complexity.

There are some really neat concepts there - the one that I like most is the way Infantry stands work. They have very weak armor, but one damage per man (three or five depending on type). Their small-arms have the "Reduce Weapon-X" special rule. This means for every damage they take the number of shots is reduced by X. Thus a UCM Legionnaire unit with five damage, a Missile Launcher, and 4 Assault Rifle shots with RW-1 naturally loses the Rifles first until at 1 damage remaining the only weapon left is the Missile Launcher. It's an elegant solution that means that infantry stands behave almost exactly like a 40k squad as they take casualties with a far more succinct statline. The rules are full of gems like these; beautifully conceived concepts that are obvious solutions once you see them, but are nonetheless completely novel.

Stuff. More work on the Bears and Kodiak, plus the first squad of Legionnaires. I've decided that I'll need few enough Infantry squads that simple squad colors will work (this one is white squad). I've also marked the Bears to correspond. You can see that white squad's transport is sporting a new stripe over the optical array since the group shot of the vehicles.

Finally, for those who are interested, http://www.theblackocean.com/ has some nice Unit Cards for DZC - they're the same size as the command cards, which is convenient. Beware - each set is about 30megs.

Redid the Legionnaires bases a bit then got distracted by a package. No pics yet, but suffice to say I'll be ready to play anyone who's interested in learning soon.

A quick side note, I did have some mispacked items - I got the wrong variant of light dropship for the UCM. So the good news is I'll be able to grade customer service, too. :) It's also something I can use anyway.

Another update: painted stuff is thin (just a rebasing of the first Legionnaire squad and the second squad painted except flocking), but my second order came and I've got most of the PHR vehicles built - though I've not got the infantry started yet.

PHR (Loaded) - Left to right - Triton A1 Strike Dropship with optional mniguns and missiles, Neptune Medium Dropship with Phobos AA Battle Walkers, Neptune with Juno A1 IFVs, Neptune with disarmed (ha!) Ares Antiarmor Battle Walkers, another upgunned Triton A1.

Image
PHR (unloaded) - Maaaaaagnets! This is a much harder operation for UCM due to the type of connections. I may or may not do it for any later purchases, I'm not sure.

Closeups - with some adjustments because the flash wased all the detail out:

Just a reminder:

I'll be hosting DZC demos at Adepticon.

You can catch me between 5:30pm-9:30pm Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20.

Remember there is also a Warmaster tournament Friday, 9am-5pm and an Epic tournament Saturday 9am-5pm.

Hope to see people there!

A quick (and somewhat ironic) update - my buildings arived from gamecraft today.

Spent about $100 on the ten buildings.

I plan to get some transparency sheets to glaze the windows, then mask off and paint different sections for lighted and unlighted windows.

Nice score. Gamecraft does make some nice stuff. I got some 20mm Iraqui stuff awhile ago. Have not put it together. I am impressed with the quality of it. Plan on getting some more later for Force on Force.
