Smeagol's Throne of Skulls musings

Postby Smeagol » Tue Aug 14, 2012 5:13 pm

I find myself considering attending the Thrown of Skulls tournament despite my misgivings about GW and their ability to perform, but since I cannot attend Bilbo's Bash and some of the other players I enjoy playing this game with are also planning on attending. So I'm thinking about attending the tournament anyway. This of course leads to my inevitable force consideration processes. So while configuring a new backup appliance and then waiting for server tasks to finish up I put Excel to some use.

The forces of Good:
Durin's Folk wrote:Warband
Balin, son of Fundin
12 Dwarf Rangers

Warband
King's Champion & 2 Heralds
10 Dwarf Rangers

Warband
Dwarf Captain
4 Dwarf Rangers
8 Dwarf Rangers with Dwarf longbow;

Warband
Flói Stonehand
4 Dwarf Rangers
8 Dwarf Rangers with Dwarf longbow;

Points = 700
Models = 52
Might = 8
Notes: Mostly painted, though not to a particularly high standard. This a force I'm very familiar withand it's one of my better forces, but it is also prone to surrendering points to my opponent in the Skull Taker category.

Numenor wrote:Warband

5 Warriors of Númenor with Shield
5 Warriors of Númenor with Spear & Shield

Warband
Captain of Númenor with Shield

Warband
Captain of Númenor with Shield;
10 Warriors of Númenor with Spear & Shield

Warband 4 8/12
Captain of Númenor with Bow
8 Warriors of Númenor with Bow

Warband 5 7/12
Captain of Númenor with Bow
7 Warriors of Númenor with Bow

Points = 700
Models = 50
Might = 11
Notes: My newest fully painted force for Good. It's not particularly powerful, but it's good enough to provide a good fight. Another force that will surrender poiints in the Skull Taker category very quickly.

Minas Tirith wrote:Warband
Denethor, Steward of Gondor
11 Guard of the Fountain Court with Shield

Warband
Faramir, Captain of Gondor with Heavy armour & Shield
12 Citadel Guard with Spear;

Warband
Beregond with Horse
11 Citadel Guard with Horse & Longbow

Warband
Cirion, Lieutenant of Amon Barad
11 Citadel Guard with Spear

Points = 700
Models = 49
Might = 6
Notes: Not painted and it hasn't gotten any play time in this configuration. I have used similar Gondorian forces and they've done very well against local players.

The forces of Evil:
Angmar wrote:Warband

Warband
Orc Captain with Shield
6 Orc Warriors with Shield

Warband
Angmar Orc Shaman
6 Orc Warriors with Shield
6 Orc Warriors with Spear

Warband
Orc Captain with Warg
1 Orc Warrior with Shield
1 Orc Warrior with Spear
10 Orc Tracker with Warg

Warband
Orc Captain with Warg;
1 Orc Warrior with Shield
1 Orc Warrior with Spear
10 Orc Trackers with Warg

Points = 700
Models = 65
Might = 9
Notes:
My favorite force of the bunch. Almost completely paintend with the new shield bearing orcs I received a while back. This is another force that will surrender Skull Taker points, but a horde with this much mobility is a bear to take on in the warbands system. Even other hordes will dislike seeing this thing across from them. Well maybe hobbits wouldn't mind so much.

Harad wrote:Warband
The Betrayer with Fell Beast
6 Serpent Guards
6 Watchers of Kârna with Bow

Warband 2 11/12
Haradrim Chieftain with Bow
5 Serpent Guards
6 Watchers of Kârna with Bow

Warband 3 10/12
Haradrim Chieftain with Spear
5 Serpent Guards
5 Watchers of Kârna with Bow

Warband 4 10/12
Haradrim Chieftain with Spear
5 Serpent Guards
5 Watchers of Kârna with Bow

Points = 700
Models = 47
Might = 8
Notes: Not much of this is painted, though it does provide a decent force that is capable of killing things. The Betrayer is a nasty hero killer when mounted on a Fellbeast and his special rule allows the Watchers and Serpent Guard to maximize their killing potential by boosting their poison rerolls.

Mordor wrote:Warband
Shagrat, War Leader of Cirith Ungol
6 Orc Warriors with Spear
6 Black Guards of Barad-dûr

Warband
Captain of the Black Guard
6 Orc Warriors with Spear
6 Black Guards of Barad-dûr

Warband
Mordor Uruk-hai Captain with Orc bow
1 Orc Warrior with Spear
8 Mordor Uruk-hai with Orc bow
2 Black Guards of Barad-dûr

Warband
Mordor Uruk-hai Captain with Orc bow
1 Orc Warrior with Spear
8 Mordor Uruk-hai with Orc bow
2 Black Guards of Barad-dûr

Points = 700
Models = 50
Might = 11
Notes: A completely painted force that features the tough and hard hitting Black Guard. This is a Skull Taker force as long as I can keep the softer elements out of trouble.

Eastern Kingdoms & Angmar wrote:Eastern Kingdoms

Warband
Easterling Captain with Shield
6 Easterling Warrior with Shield
6 Easterling Warrior with Shield & Pike

Angmar
Warband
Shade

Points = 700
Models = 40
Might = 6
Notes: Basically my 600 point Easter Kingdoms force with a 100 point ally. I'm not sure this force will translate to 700 points particularly well.

Warband
Uruk-hai Captain with Orc bow
8 Uruk-hai Scouts with Orc bow
4 Feral Uruk-hai

Points = 698
Models = 52
Might = 9
Notes: Not fully painted, but a fairly hard hitting force. It's a bit soft due to being a scout force.

Isengard wrote:Warband

Warband
Dunlending Chieftain with Shield
2 Dunlending Warriors with Shield
10 Ruffians with Bow

Warband
Sharkey and Worm
1 Orc Warriors with Spear
10 Ruffians with Bow

Points = 699
Models = 65
Might = 10
Notes: Another horde using the Ruffians and Dunlending Warriors I haven't gotten painted or used in many games. It hits hard, but it's still a soft force.

After my battle against Steve's Easterlings I've decided to make some changes to the orc's lineup. Defense six troops are a bugger to take on when you are forced to hit them in a frontal assault. Shagrat's impressive performance when backed up by an Orc Taskmaster coupled with the lack of a hard hitting hero in the beta list means some changes to the leadership line up as well.

Mordor Orcs wrote:Shagrat with shield
1 Orc warrior with shield
1 Orc warrior with spear
10 Uruk-hai warriors with Keck bow

Orc Taskmaster
6 Orc warriors with shield
6 Orc warriors with spear

Orc Drummer
6 Orc warriors with shield
6 Orc warriors with spear

Orc Shaman
6 Orc warriors with shield
6 Orc warriors with spear

Orc Captain on warg
6 Orc warriors with shield
6 Orc warriors with spear

Points = 700
Might = 8+
Models = 65
Bows = 20
Notes = The force has a good fighting hero to lead it and if the orcs taskmaster can do his job then Shagrat will be that much more effective. The addition of the Uruk-hai bowmen adds in FV 4 and S 4 to my fighting line if I need it. They are directly covered by the Shaman's Fury spell, but secondarily they are. Since the orcs heroes will be affected then their Stand fast will cover the Uruk-hai. The force still has an effective ,cavalry threat and the including of the drummer means that the majority of my force is very speedy indeed. The Uruks will be left behind in a general advance, but that's okay since they are designed to be part of my secondary and reserves. Their archery will still give the ability to project force and once I'm engaged I just abandon their bows and send them into the fray.
