Discussion concerning the latest version of the Epic 40K game system.

New to Epic Question

Postby Mad Jack Deacon » Sat Oct 22, 2011 11:36 pm

So I've had about 5K of Epic SM stuff for years along with the E:A book.

I've futzed around with it here and there, but I've never played and I've never finished painting it up. Lately, I've been on a hobby kick and I busted it all back out along with a couple of other specialist games because I love the GRIMDARK, but I'm pretty damn "meh" about 40K and Fantasy right now.

So the question is this: When I'm putting together a detachment/formation, do upgrades add to the number of units or does it replace a stand? For example in a SM Tactical formation there are 6 stands of Space Marines. Would a commander make it 7, or would it replace one of the 6?

The reason this seems obtuse to me is that I'm pretty sure you don't remove one of the SM units stands if you pay the points for a Dreadnought upgrade, so why would you if you paid the points for a commander?

Additionally, if a commander stand is simply added to a unit formation, would it just tag along in one of the rhinos for the formation, or would it need one of its own?

I looked all through the E:A rulebook, but I thought it was woefully vague about how to structure/build the units. Maybe I'm just overthinking it.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Commanders are characters, and their abilities are added to an existing unit. Therefore, you would have a tactical formation of five Tactical Marines, one Tactical Marine with Commander, plus transport.

It's important to note that you may add Characters to any unit in the formation, not only the "core" units. Thus if you add the Dreadnought upgrade to the Tactical formation, you may add a Character upgrade to a Dread if you wish. Chaplain Dreads can be neat.

Thanks for the response Spectrar! That definitely helps me grasp it a bit better.

As far as games go, I'm trying to get everything painted (or at least primed red) first, but that should happen shortly. I'm only a couple of blocks away from CLG so I can meet up there for an Epic tutorial or every now and again I trip out to the bunker in Downers Grove.
