Where to Get Started with Epic

The Epic bug is starting to take hold, I think. I've downloaded the rules and lists from GW; also found the chaos lists.

What I'm not sure on is a good starting army. I know in 40K to learn the game I would recommend standard space marines. But in Epic, I'm just not getting a good feel for where to start an army.

I'm tempted to just get the models to run through the first 2 chapter's training scenarios, which would give me around 3750 of SM when everything is said and done. Though I'm tempted to just jump into the deep end and build a Word Bearer list from the Black Legion list.

Assuming money is not an issue where would you recommend I start, both army wise and points wise? Since I don't know of any other Central IL players currently I would be looking more at tournament play, if that helps any.

3000 points is the standard tournament size, at least here in the midwest. I know pretty much for a fact that Adepticon's tournament will be 3000 points (and is on the Friday IIRC)

If you are truely interested in starting chaos, and IIRC World Bearers are the Slannesh legion, I can help you out with some of the old chaos plastics. I think I have some 75 of the old marines loose and have well enough old dreadnoughts and beast riders (which make good biker analogs) to help you out.

Chaos is fun, but outside of infantry, models can be difficult to find or simply do not exist.

Space Marines are the easiest in terms of availability and painting up a large number.

Shoot for 3000 points - it's not that many models really. For Marines I;d suggest 2 or 3 Tactical Squads with upgrades and go from there. Land Raiders and Terminators are fun, but really expensive. Thunderhawks and Assault Marines make a nice combo. Bikes and Speeders are not so great. Predator companies (when not mixed) are good. Whirlwinds are a must, but pretty fragile. Devastators are good too - with upgrades they make a good garrison choice to put on Overwatch.

I'd consider a couple of anti-air units too - Hunter upgrades to units like your Whirlwinds or even some fighters you can put on Combat Air Patrol.

This all assuming you go Marines. I've really just started playing my Black Legion, and can't speak to the flexibility of the list much since I am really only playing with a handful of different unit types right now.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ordered some SM last night. Once I have some actual experience I'll see where I go from the starting order.
