Chaos army ideas

This months AWC tourney could have been called the return of Chaos. Chaos lists were everywhere and Chris Mehrstedt tied for first place with a Chaos list. All this chaos got me and Brian thinking and we brainstormed lists at Hooters Saturday night. This is the version I came up with for 1850pts

Hq -Warpsmith
Tr - 10 CSM, 2 meltaguns, veterans, CCW, rhinos
Tr - 10 CSM, 2 plasmaguns, veterans,CCW, rhinos
Tr - 10 cultists
Fa - Helldrake
Fa - 5 Nurgle Spawn
Hv - 5 Havocs, 4 autocannons
Hv - 3 Nurgle Obliterators
Bastion with Icarus Lascannon

HQ - Primaris Psyker
Tr - 10 Penal legion
Fa - Vendetta
Hv - Basilisk, enclosed

I've got all sorts of issues. I have nostalgia for my old 3rd edition Iron Warrior list and I wanted the enclosed basilisk. That meant an IG ally, but I only wanted the bare minimum of IG. I also managed to squeeze a vendetta in there.

The chaos portion plays like this. The havocs sit inside the bastion immune to return fire. They fire their autocannons at anything they want. On top of the bastion I have the 3 Obliterators with command of the field. I attach the Warpsmith to the Oblits and he uses his BS of 5 to fire the Icarus Lascannon. This is my pillbox of shooting death.

To protect the pillbox I have two bare CSM squads and the 5 spawn. If I ditch the IG ally contingent, then I have 427pts to add to the chaos list. At least one will have to be a troop unit and another would be a fast moving assault element. Possibly a Chaos Lord of Khorne on Bike with the Axe of Blind Fury. He could attach to the Spawn to get across the board quickly. I would like him in the original chaos/IG version, but that's 130pts I need to come up with.

I suggest that you get rid of the spawn and take 10 more cultists and arm them with autoguns so they can have the range and more shots because they will die in combat anyway. Also, take two or three havocs with bolters to add buffer wounds to the squad.

Also, ditch the bastion and add more infantry to the army.

I haven't ever used a Bastion before. I like the idea that they dudes embarked within it cannot be targeted. Can the Warpsmith repair buildings lke the Bastion? I haven't used him either, and if he's Fearless that would be really good for the Oblits, but I think he's at least Ld 10? BS5 for Icarus Las is real nice.

I think Spawn are best used as bodyguards for Bike or Steed Lords. For the 180 points you could get another Helldrake in there, although 5 Nurgle Spawn are a good tarpit unit at T6.

I will be curious to hear how the Bastion performs compared to the Skyshield Pad in terms of shooter survivability.

Just so you know, the defilade from the top of the bastion is about 28" with the lascannon (ie, the deadzone where the lascannon cannot possibly shoot is about 28" from the top of the bastion).

Don't you have to fill the 2 troop slots on allies to take anything else?

Yeah, for an Allied Detachment the compulsory is 1 HQ and 1 Troops, and you can add up to 1 extra Troops and 1 of each other FOC slot.
