Mordor and Angmar

Mordor and Angmar

Postby prion2001 » Wed Jan 18, 2012 6:45 pm

Hi All,

So the only plastic infantry I don't have are Orcs (Mordor and Angmar). I have many character models and even a troll for these lists but no fodder (I mean, foot troops).

So, what is useful? I may have picked up 24 Orcs with sword and shield. Should I get more of the 24 orc box, Morranon Orc box, Orc Trackers?

What I've done for mordor is picked up 2 boxes each of the plastic mordor and morannon orcs.

For the Morannons I've given them all shields. Mordor orcs only get shields if they're molded on. That being said you should buy them soon before you're stuck with the new expensive boxes or get em from fleabay

Definitely get one box of each. Both are very useful. The Mordor plastic orcs are horrible sculpts though.

I have a line on a box of each (the old ones with 24). But, I also have 24 orcs with shield and sword. I'm guessing I need spears but wonder if I end up with to many sword and shield guys if i add a regular box. And I've seen people use the Orc archers as trackers so do I follow that or actually get trackers? Is Orc or tracker shooting even useful?

Shooting is useful. Orc archers suck. Orc trackers are better and cheaper. They boost numbers and improve your ability to interdict movement.

That being said you are better served by using Haradrim for the same points. :-)

So I'm wondering if:

a) I should buy actual trackers. Will they get used in a genetic Orc army?

b) should I get more Orcs so I have spears to support my sword guys?

c) is an Orc banner a useful thing in a force?

d) is a generic Orc captain useful (I have most of the named characters from the Mordor book but no Captains).

a) I like the tracker models but do not have a problem with using orcs as proxies

b) spears are going to be key in an orc army in my opinion. you will need them to gain the advantage vs high fight and strength armies

c) depending on your force build, Joe Crone ran a killer angmar orc force with a banner, reversely, you might get more use out of a drummer with a bunch of morannons

d) if you can make a force using the named heroes, you get that extra 3/1/1 m/w/f stat line for only 5-10pts more.

They are only usable in Mordor orc forces. Angmar cannot use them. I do not use orc archers at all. If I use orc archers then they are orc trackers.

Spear support is a definite need for orcs. With only one attack they will get owned by prettty much every combat line there is. Unless you are a tactical genius and can use skirmisher swarm tactics to overwhelm your opponent. I've not seen this work yet.

If you have an extra 30 points available then yes, but I rarely run around with banners in my forces unless they are part of a heroes special rule. They are useful for two handed warriors however since you already suffer a -1 that extra die roll gives you a much needed boost, but I don't use two handed weapon armed orc warriors. They also help out your heroes to win fights against inferior opponents (of which there are few).

Yes. Of course I prefer using generic heroes over the more expensive kinds. They are heroes and their Might pool is very useful for keeping Priority when you absolutely need it. They also extend the range of your Shaman's Fury spell since the heroes will auto pass and then they will exert their Stand Fast effect at the end of their movement. Of course the named orc heroes can do the same thing.

If you are going to take a named combat hero (AKA Shagrat or Gothmog) or two then use these guys as support to provide Might for Heroic Moves and use your named heroes Might for those fights you need to win.

Most of us won't have a problem with this, but GW TOs probably will. They've drawn the line at using generic orc models as trackers and vice versa in their UK events. GWUS is using the same packets and rules so you're likely to run into that same problem with them.

that being said jaime, I think I'm getting my hands on an extra Gorbag in a bartertown trade. If so I'll toss him your way.

Thanks a lot for the input everyone. I just hate to rush to buy so save money and then find I didn't need something. The archers and banner are things I usually use but I thought I'd think about changing things up. What I have seen a lot are Spear Orcs so I'll probably get more of them soon and an Orc captain just in case.
