bunker hours

Postby rosco » Tue Jun 18, 2013 9:11 am

not sure if everyone had a chance to run by the bunker lately but the hours on saturday are changing. as of the 29th of june the bunker will only be open till 8pm. it is understandable since it clears out really fast and looks deserted after 645-7.

And so it ends, not with a bang but a whisper. So very sad.

It's almost as if removing the things that made the bunker cool made it so people don't want to hang out there anymore.

it really shouldn't be a suprise of dropping the hours on saturday. rarely near closing is there more than 3-5 people including a worker there past 730ish-8. it'll actually help their staff out for coverage that night and if you need to have tons of hobby time get up early and go in there, they open at 10am.

Well, things I used to go to the bunker for:

* Communal painting/hobbying atmosphere. The painting bar was cool. They have a few tables there now, but there's not space at any of them for more than a couple of people, so you lose the whole community feel of it.

* Unique tables to play on. They used to have some pretty sweet custom tables. Perhaps they weren't good for tournament play, but I remember making trips out there just to have something different to play on. The old ork scrapyard, the trench table, the big city, and even quite a few of the customized pieces were all good stuff. Now it's all Realm of Battle + Citadel Parts - and that works if you just need a table, but I can do that in my basement, and I've got beer on tap too.

* Harder-to-find stuff for sale. I used to make trips to the bunker to get specialist game stuff. I used to make trips to the bunker to pick up Forgeworld models. Now, it's no different than any other GW store. They don't even sell Direct Only models. Lemme see - I can drive 45 minutes (each way), and pay full retail + tax, or I can order online from somewhere, save myself the trip and get 20% off.

* Poor selection of not-hard-to-find stuff in stock. Seriously, the last three times I've been out to the bunker, I've had something in mind to buy. Each time, they've been out-of-stock. They took inventory control away from the manager, so the computer tells them that they should have two widgits, and ships them two widgits. These two widgits get sold almost on arrival, then they're out-of-stock on widgits again, until the next shipment from HQ. If a manager was involved in this, he could say, "I know that there are 20 people who have picked up the new army, so I'll order 20 Widgits". But it's all done from HQ now, and so they're almost always out of things.

I mean, the bottom line is, the Bunker IS a store. Their primary reason-for-being is to sell things, everything else is a means to that end. But, as a store, they're giving me very little incentive to shop there. Their prices are higher than what I'd pay online. And that's fine, if they offer me some other reason to go there. I'll happily pay a few dollars more to pay where I play, and I try to make a purchase when I play at the bunker as a 'thanks for the space' money. But the incentives to shop there are dwindling. Poor stock management, nothing not-available-elsewhere. And the incentives to play/paint there are also dwindling.

And this isn't a knock on the bunker staff at all. I'm aware that they're just as frustrated with the policies handed down from on-high. Probably more frustrated in some cases, as the store manager is responsible for hitting sales targets in spite of corporate policies that limit what he can do to make the store appealing and prohibit him from managing his stock effectively.

I miss the unique tables the most. something about playing a game on a cool table adds a extra dimension of fun,

Redbeard - you hit my issues head on. And you're right, the saddest thing is it is completely out of the bunker's control. They know what they need to do to make an impact and it's out of their hands.

You guys all have a really good grasp on what made the bunker great, and why it is stumbling.

Why not turn it's failure into a success? Why not start a really great gaming store in it's wake? Or, maybe a better idea would be a gaming 'club'. I quit my good job with the state about 3 years ago to start a business. I am not rich, but I work for myself and it's way better than working for the state.

A good business fills an empty niche. GW, but pushing independent stores out of the niche, filling it, and subsequently withdrawing form it is creating real opportunity.

If the bunker does close down, and a couple of you guys see what I see, don't be afraid to drop me a PM. We can brainstorm and come up with something better and more profitable than the bunker, I am sure.
