Chicago Bnker downsizing to single employee store

Postby Generalissimo_Fred » Tue Jan 22, 2013 6:02 pm

It's all over the blogosphere that the Chicago Battle Bunker in Downers Grove will downsize to a single employee store which is all the rage around the country. Tables will probably be reduced to 2-3 and I store gaming will be severely reduced. I've seen this restated from multiple sources. Anyone know if this rumor is true?

If so does that bring an end to the monthly AWC tourneys?

Certainly consistent with what I posted about the LA Bunker.

Any confirmations from the bunker staff?

I would assume they would move / close the bunker location due to reduced size requirement.

I don't understand how one person is supposed to keep an eye on the store, run demo games, paint store minis, observe the gaming area, answer questions, and everything else in between in that big shop. That's not a small hole-in-the-wall shop after all. They need at least a decent size staff to run that store. And the bunker is always busy.

That could also lead to the bunker having similar hours like the small shops including closing early (meaning the veteran gamers won't get a chance to play) and being closed on Monday and Tuesday.

So does that mean tournaments will be scheduled around the time they close the store for a half hour so the single employee can take their lunch break?

Also having one employee in the store could lead to people stealing merchandise because the single employee can't be everywhere at once.

And the bunker makes more than enough money to keep more than one person in the store. As far as I'm concerned, they should get the washrooms fixed so we don't have to go to Office Max to do our business.
After a three year hiatus...I'm back.

I suppose the current gaming area would be sectioned off and closed and the existing sales area would be all that is open.

Looks like the tournament circuit for AWC will be a traveling one again. Will need to start finding locations if this happens.

Yet another in a long line of questionable decisions by the business end of GW. I can't help but think they're doing anything possible to remain profitable until Kirby retires, at which point, the cumulative impact of short-term thinking will catch up with them.

When a started playing, a decade ago, the bunker was great. You could pick up specialist games there, they had Forgeworld in stock, themed tables and tons of creativity put into custom terrain pieces. One by one, this has all gone by the wayside. The only reason to go there now is the proximity of Portillo's. There's no draw. The tables are nothing but the generic corporate stuff, and there's nothing you can buy there that you can't get cheaper online. You can't ever order Forgeworld there anymore.

I used to make a point of buying things at the bunker, because it was a welcoming place to play. Not anymore. As others have pointed out, they can't even be bothered to have a working toilet. Combine this with the ever-increasing costs for models and codexes*, and forget it, I'll get what I want online with a discount. I'm sure I'm not the only one, and I'm sure that this change in how people buy is responsible for the shift to one-man stores.

* - So, yeah, $50 for a codex... well, they gave it a hardback. Seriously? That's a 150% price increase in under ten years for codexes. $75 for the main rulebook. I find myself asking, are they even trying to attract new customers at all with prices like these? I can't think of any other game with a price point of $125 before you even start to add in models.

When I called the bunker and asked about downsizing to a one man store I was told that they are NOT.

I'm not saying that they are or not. Just saying what I was told.

I also do not believe this is the case. I recently spoke to Tim at the Bunker to make plans for next seasons AWC event.

If it does, the New Game In Town in Dekalb is still a valuable location ;)

Guess it's been confirmed for 2014.

GW management I guess. Hearing it from a local who knows the know.
