New club Terrain

Discussion concerning the latest version of the Epic 40K game system.

New club Terrain

Postby Spectrar Ghost » Sun Dec 19, 2010 11:13 pm

I have most of an Imperial City, the splash release from when the 40k buildings were new, sitting unused. Most of the sections are scale independent enough to use as Epic terrain (gotta give up on the Manufactorum doors, though). Of course, the 40k buildings will only be useful for large open spaces, smaller spaces will need to be scratch built. So, given these constraints, what do you, as the Chicago Specialist Games Club, prefer in your urban terrain?

1) Intact or Ruined buildings? This will have a large effect on speed of production, of course. Ruined buildings need cut out windows instead of just frames, and need internal structure besides simple supports. This is more of a concern in scratch built parts as the GW stuff would be expected to have minimal internal structure.

2) Maximum dimensions? Probably under 26cm x 13cm, but I can be persuaded. Those are the dimensions of the XL Baseplate from S6 Engineering, whose site is unfortunately down right now. They are making some awesome stuff though.

3) My scratch builds seem to lean into the modern office/industrial feel, but I think with the right accessories, that can be changed without having to cut out gothic arches everywhere. Hopefully that works out for everyone.

Suggestions and comments are welcome.

I think a combination of intact and ruins would be good. The office buildings would be fine. How much of an expense are we talking about?

For the buildings themselves, virtually none. I've got so much of the GW crap I don't know what to do with it. Maybe I'll need another Basilica or Sanctum set. And we all know about my plasticard addiction.

Baseplates and roadways, I have to wait 'till the S6 site comes back up. I think he's switching hosts right now or something. They're suprisingly inexpensive, IIRC, though I'd want to do it in as few purchases as possible, since shipping over the pond is painful.

So I made an order from S6 today that will make a good start to terrain, and I think I have the plans for the intact structures mostly figured out. Ruins will conform to the same footprints, but will be harder to execute. Not sure on those.

As I've concluded in the past, the GW ruins have a very limited application in Epic scale. Cathedrals and Titan hangars, but not much else. Certainly nothing that will fit on the baseplates Ive ordered.

Now, I know there are a limited number of tables at the Bunker that are suitable for Epic, and a limited number of terrain pieces that work as well. However, I have to ask the question: do we, the Chicago Specialist Games Club, need our own terrain?

I ask because no one has brought smaller scale terrain in in forever, and no one seems to mind. I'd personally love to be able to play on an Epic scaled table, but 1) Buildings are time consuming, ruins more so. And, 2) While I have enough P-card to last until the end of the Mayan Long Count, and thus the world's end, in a couple years, the cost of the baseplates is not insignificant.

Thus I ask if the terrain is neccessary for the club, and if so, whether others in the club would be willing to contribute time and/or funds to it's creation. Even some smaller scale hills or forests would add to the variety of terrain we have.

I'll sound off on this tonight, but wanted to get it to the members that will not be attending tonight.

Nat, I understand your points especially after talking to you last night. I'm gonna talk to Dan and see if we would be able to store the terrain at the Bunker for us to use. Otherwise there's little point to making the terrain if it won't be used.

Does anyone remember the color progression we used on the Games Day table?

I've reattached the roads, and am looking at touching up the paint.

Looking at them, it looks like the ground is Scorched Brown/Graveyard Earth/Kommando Khaki, and the Sidewalks are Codex Grey with a Chaos Black wash?

I think you have the colors correct. The grey may have been just a primer.

You're probably right. I think they were undercoated with Roughcoat, but that's just Codex Grey with junk in it...
