Battle for Lombardius Prime Pictures

Today the Battle for Lombarius Prime was fought. Orks were slaughtered wholesale, entire tank companies were wiped out, and still the battle raged. Entire Warbands took the risk of tellyporting into battle, Thunderhawks swooped overhead like adamantium birds of prey, and still the battle raged. Orbiting Kroozers gouged titanic craters in the battlefield while fearless Guardsmen held the trenches, and the battle raged on.

What could be so important to the Imperium and the barbarous Orks that so many lives were spent? Lombardius Prime, the capital of the planet Lombardius, had three features that had to be defended at all costs.

First, the spaceport. The spaceport was a vital chokepoint in the Imperial supply chain, and needed to be intact. As such, a contingent of the Blood Angels was tasked with defending it. The landing pad was one of the few structures visible from orbit, and needed to be captured by the Orks so they would have something to aim their Landers and Roks at.

Second, the Tank Factory. This structure produced Leman Russ battle tanks for the Guard Regiments on Lombardius, and the war effort might well collapse without it. The tank factory had many automated systems that Ork Meks could modify to create wagons and buggies at a pace unthinkable otherwise.

Third, The Hedgehog's Song. This small building was viewed as a probable secret command center by the Orks, as Imperial officers were often seen entering after dark and not emerging until morning. This was, of course, entirely wrong, but much of the top brass had a definite aim to keep the building intact nonetheless.

These were the objectives that would see the holders to victory, or the losers to ignominious defeat.

Before anyone asks, I have no idea how many points were in play in this game. The Imperials probably had about 15,000pts to begin with, with an additional 12,000pts in Ultramarines, and undetermined amounts of other reinforcements, most of which did not see play. The Orks probably started with 20,000pts, including 10 Great Gargants and a Mega Gargant, and an additional 5,000-7,000pts of reinforcements. A very rough estimate would therefore be that there were 60,000pts available, of which 45,000 saw the table.

The Baran Seigemasters were tasked with guarding the approach to the city. They set up a kill zone along the entry roads backed up by artillery and troops along the wrecked city walls.
