How do you paint your Orks?

Postby Spectrar Ghost » Wed Mar 03, 2010 4:51 pm

All right, I've primed my first two Ork Warbands. Now I need to decide how to paint them. How you paint your Orks?

Skin:
The few 40k Orks I have finished use an Orkhide Shade basecoat, followed by Catachan Green and 1:1 Catachan/Camo Green layering.

I am thinking of adapting this to Epic by cutting out the basecoat. Essentially, Catachan Green basecoat with a 1:1 Catachan/Camo Drybrush. This will make the skin tone slightly lighter than my Steel Legion paint scheme.

Another option would be to do a Goblin green basecoat with a Thraka Green wash.

Metal:
40k Orks have a Black undercoat, with Tin Bitz and 1:1 Tin Bitz/Boltgun drybrushes. Probably doesn't need modification, but comments/suggestions are welcome.

Clothes:
I am thinking of a Goff-led force. Of the five Big Warbands planned, two are 'plain', and three have added Big Gunz. The plain will probably be Goff, and the ones wif gunz will be a mix of Bad Moonz and Deffskulls. The big KoS will, of course, be Evil Sunz, and the Stormboyz will be Blood Axes.

Goffs are easy. Black with White detail. Bad Moonz I am thinking of Iyanden Darksun with Gryphonne Sepia wash. Suggestions are welcome, though; I'm not sure how this will turn out. Deffskullz would probably be Mordian Blue with an Asurmen wash, something that looks good on my WFB Skaven. Evil Sunz are likely to be Mechrite with an Ogryn Flesh wash, again a combination that looks good for Skaven clothes. I'm at a loss as to the Blood Axes though; perhaps a mid-brown or dark tan, to contrast the skin and stay away from the Moonz scheme, but this is my biggest stumbling block right now. Also the least urgent, though, as I don't have enough Stormboyz yet to make the formation.

All these are still open to change, though, so Shaggrudd, Bon_Vivant, or any other Ork players, please chime in.

Thanks.
SG

Nat, keep it simple, dude. I primed them black, snot green for skin, boltgun drybrushed for weapons (leaving some black showing at times), and red on the left shoulder pad and glyth plates. Keep it simple or you'll never get them done. Besides, how much detail do you honestly think people will see? They're only 6mm.

Quick Goff test Stand.
~25min, including some changes. Estimate ~5-7min/stand in production line.

Metal: DB Tin Bitz followed by DB Boltgun.
Skin: Catachan Green basecoat, Camo Green DB.
Skull White on shoulderpad.

Yeah. Need to email my resume. One section needs polishing, will do tomorrow when boy's @ school...

I'm not sold on the lack of any highlights on the black. Maybe a light Codex Grey DB? Course, some 'ardcoat would help highlights as well. ;)

No, just call. Do the resume after he calls you in for an interview and give it to him at the interview.

A drybrush would work, but if it's too much, they won't look Goff, too little and no one will notice. Put them on the table and stand back three feet. What do you really see at that distance? You are better off with flat colors. Keep your sanity.

I think they look fine, particularly at 3 feet (90 cm.'s; it's starting to sink in.) Besides, they certainly look friendlier than Dethblasta's did on Sat.

That's because there are only five, not a hundred plus transports!

When the other 19 stands get painted they'll be less freindly. Doubly so when I get all 140 stands for my 3k army painted!
