Discussion concerning the latest version of the Epic 40K game system.

Epic every other Thursday

Postby Shaggrudd Dethblasta » Sun Oct 18, 2009 7:38 am

Starting on the 22nd of October, members of the Specialist Games Club will be meeting every other Thurday to play games of Epic at the Games Workshop Chicagoland Battle Bunker. I invite everyone to join us whether you want to play Epic or are interested in trying it out.

Epic is an exciting game that allows you to experience the 40k universe in ways that 40k wishes it could. Nothing you do in 40k or Appocalypse will ever compare to what you can do in just a standard game of Epic. The cost of Epic is also A LOT CHEAPER than 40k! To start with, how about a free rulebook! It is also A LOT EASIER TO PAINT! The most complicated technique used to paint Epic is drybrushing. We once painted almost the entire Ultramarines chapter in a few days for an event. It is a game that is truely exciting to play and definately worth your time to at least check out. Do you want to find out where all those Imperial Guard tank varients came from, Play Epic!

I also want to invite the groups of players out there who do own epic armies and wonder if there are others out there that also play the game. We are out there and if you come out and join us, you'll be amazed at the amount of players who do. There is plenty of space at the Bunker.

So come on out and check out what is going on. Try out a game of Epic and find for yourself a game that is really going to show you what the 40k universe has to offer. Play the game that 40k and Appocalyse has tried to be. Play Epic!

I am going to be too busy the next month or so, but if this is still happening December 3rd, I will try to come.

Our intent is to make this a regular thing, if there are changes, i'll post them. The most important thing is that people come out to play games if they have armies, or to try it out if you don't.

I know that at times I may sound a little negative towards 40k when I start describing Epic. That is really not my intent, it's just that Epic is such a great game and offers so much more than 40k does and does it in a manner that doesn't break your pocketbook. Comparing 40k to Epic is like comparing a grot to a space marine. There is so much more to the Epic game that 40k does not have without the addition of special rules and rediculous amounts of Forge World. The funny thing about Epic is that the FW tanks are cheaper per tank than the regular GW vehicles! ex: many FW tanks are three for $13.50, but with the change in FW prices, they might even be cheaper!

To give you an example of what is possible here is my current ork army led by Shaggrudd Dethblasta:

3 warbands each with 4 nob stands, 12 boyz and 4 grotz, 8 battlewagonz and 2 flak wagons
4 blitz brigades with 2 flak wagons, 12 gunwagons and two wagons with the mek/zapgun upgrade
2 blitz brigades each with 12 dethkoptaz
1 stompa mob with 4 stompas and a supa stompa
1 stompa mob with 10 stompas
2 'uge kult of speed (24 models each)
A fighta bomba sqwadrun with 9 aircraft
1 Gargant
2 Great Gargants
1 mekboy gunmob with 10 bigguns
3-4 stormboy mobs with kommandoz

I actually have more gunwagons (around 96 total) most of which I got off Ebay for next to nothing. This does not include my Eldar army, space marine, nor the IG. The neat thing about Epic is that the armies fight like their fluff. What you read is what you get. You really see what they mean when they say that Eldar are a hit and run race. You finally see the IG get the respect they deserve when you see just how much of a juggernaught the IG armies are. Orks armies are just simply put- BIG!

And they paint so quickly! Two days ago I painted 24 gun wagons, a battlefortress and a gunfortress in 2 hours! Space marines go even faster! I can't stop going on and on, but I'll spare eveyone.

However, do me a favor, if you have played Epic and really like it, chime in and say why.

we actually had a pretty good turn out, with three games going at once and several other people wanting to learn the game.

Heck, we have the Bunker Manager potentially hooked on a potential Necron army. That being said Chad, what was the company that was making those models?

The minis are from Plasmablastgames.com.
They are at the bottom of the second page of the Orbital Combine in the Shop.
I am thinking of picking some up if anyone wants to do a big order.

I'd almost be interested except that I'm about to expand my black legion a bit with an army I'll be getting from a guy in Lansing via Bartertown including that really cool converted titan that Matt Sabol had sold at Adepticon which I missed by about 10 minutes.

We did have a great turnout and I anticipate getting more people out to play some games. Squats concerned me at first, but I was able to pull off a victory! I guess Tau didn't fair so well, oh well!

Heh, in talking some tactics with some of the guys on the tactical commands forums, my army that day had some major flaws.

1: I needed at least one formation with some form of transport.
2: I should have run the overlords as a single formation of 2 and spent the other 200 points elsewhere.
3: the correct points for the mole mortars.

Makes sense Rob, I thought it was odd you not having any transport, especially with some of those behemoth looking things you got. We got to figure out how to make the squats a better army because once I was able to engage you, your units started to colapse. Then again, maybe orks are not a good army for squats to face. I guess we will have to play more games to figure things out. Oh darn!

Well. I found some rhinos that I found and I do have 3 Gorgons. Remember, this was the first experiment with the list. The leviathans and stuff also come out of the war engine component of the army so it was either the overlords or a leviathan.

If they can use rhinos, I got some extras

Sounds great. I couldn't make it - was in Nebraska that week. When's the next get together? the 5th of November?

I like Epic because it utilizes more recognizable tactics on the tabletop. Alternating turns wtih all actions complted before moving to the next and the ability to seize the initiative give more tactical choices and options.

Love it. Glad more poeple play it.

Hope to get out there next week.

I would believe so. Now I need to figure out what I want to try with my squats this next time.
