Swarms, Instant Death, and Order of Operations

Postby Lord Krungharr » Tue Dec 04, 2012 11:58 pm

So here's a scenario in question: Heldrake fires Baleflamer (S6/AP3) at a unit of Scarabs, let's say 6 Scarab bases. The template is placed to hit the Lord and 4 Scarab bases, the max it can hit from this hypothetical scenario.

To Wound rolls vs majority Toughness of 3, so let's say the Heldrake inflicts 4 wounds on the Scarab unit.

How do the wounds play out regarding the doubling of wounds because of the Swarms rule?
Does the first wound get allocated and then get doubled, then InstaKilling the base because of the S6 twice T3, having the next wound carries over to the next base? Or does that double wound just go away due to the Scarab dying, just leaving 3 more wounds to be allocated?

Or do the 4 wounds inflicted first get doubled for the whole unit, then getting allocated, InstaKilling each base as each Wound gets allocated, thereby eliminating the 6 base unit with 8 S6 Wounds?

Furthermore, what happens if the Scarab unit is joined by an Independent Character, like a Necron Lord or whoever?... how do we decide which inflicted wounds get doubled if the template is placed to hit the Lord with some Scarabs?
Does it matter upon which models the template is placed? Or does directional damage matter more in this situation? If the closest model is the Necron Lord, then he can try to save the wounds if possible, but if he dies then we're left with the same questions about the doubled wounds, InstaDeath, and carrying over to the next Scarab.

I fail! After a reread, it works thusly:

Wounds are allocated singly, on a model by model basis. So, if a unit of 6 Scarabs, joined by a Destroyer Lord in the middle, gets hit by four S6, AP4 template wounds...

1. SS1 gets allocated a wound.
2. SS1 doesn't get a saved and suffers an unsaved wound.
3. That unsaved wound gets doubled, so now SS1 has taken 2 wounds.
4. SS1 then suffers Instant Death.
5. SS2 gets allocated the 2nd wound in the pool.
6. SS2 doesn't get a saved and suffers an unsaved wound.
7. That unsaved wound gets doubled, so now SS2 has taken 2 wounds.
8. SS2 then suffers Instant Death.
9. SS3 gets allocated the 3rd wound in the pool.
10. SS3 doesn't get a saved and suffers an unsaved wound.
11. That unsaved wound gets doubled, so now SS3 has taken 2 wounds.
12. SS3 then suffers Instant Death.
13. The Destroyer Lord gets allocated the 4th wound in the pool.
14. He passes his armor save.

Basically, everything is self-contained on each model. ID-causing template weapons are no better than hitting a swarm with a missile, though it does ignore their cover and usually their armor. Blast/Template weapons got a 50% reduction in effectiveness, and their doubling wounds is only useful for lower-strength weapons. Even so, one of the wounds will get wasted every time unless the swarm has four wounds.

Never, unless it's a Barrage template. You allocate wounds as normal per page 15.

Rewrote my previous answer. I don't like being wrong, especially when the rule actually is worse than I hoped, but oh well dem's the breaks! 8)
